An exceptional Stamp Seal (?) with an elephant
Lot 981
UNCERTAIN. Circa 3rd-1st centuries BC (?). Stamp Seal (?) (Bronze, 23 mm, 9.58 g). Elephant walking to right. Rev. Blank. Beautifully engraved and very well preserved. Handle brocken off on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This charming elephant may have served as a signet or stamp seal, as suggested by the traces of a broken handle on its reverse side. Dating it proves challenging: while the elephant evokes associations with the Seleukids, pachyderms are also well documented in various other cultural-historical contexts, making a Roman-period attribution equally plausible.
